Identifying which grass you have and which grass you want to flourish in your lawn. There are specific herbicides and fertilizers for different grass types. The most common types we see in North Texas is Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia.
Identifying weeds on your property seems overwhelming and impossible. Actually, it’s more simple than you think. You only need to correctly categorize them into two main categories: broadleaf weeds and grassy weeds. It is important to identify which category of weeds you are targeting because not all herbicides are effective in eliminating certain types of weeds. Also, some can be harmful to your lawn and others are safe. It is critical to use the right herbicide with the correct mixture. Otherwise, your plants, flowers, and grass can be negatively effected.
Pre-Emergent Weed Control
Pre-emergent is a preventative product that prevents weeds from sprouting. As a result, it has no effect on current weeds but is a crucial part of any program. Early spring and early fall is the time you should apply pre-emergent. Also, keep in mind the weather and moisture levels during this time as it is a key factor in deciding when to apply pre-emergent.
Post-Emergent Weed Control
Post-emergent weed control is what most people are familiar with. Any professional will tell you that a liquid treatment is the best route for killing established weeds. It is always important to add a non-ionic surfactant with your herbicide of choice. The best time to do start this project is the spring and summer. The weather plays a big part in getting results, the weather needs to be warm. Broadleaf weeds can be treated in the spring once we have 70 degree weather consistently. However, for grassy weeds it needs to be very warm outside. For us in Texas you can typically start treating grassy weeds in May.
There are many different types of fertilizers for different types of grasses. It is important to know what type of grass you have and the grass you want to flourish. We have found that a granular fertilizer is the best option so you can get the added benefit of slow release. Fertilizer should always be watered into the soil. If you apply fertilizer and don’t water soon after applying you can cause damage to your lawn. Also, be sure to sweep the excess fertilizer off of the concrete and stone because fertilizer has iron that will leave rust stains if the granules are left on hard surfaces.
